Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Mass/Metrowest will recognize Unum for their comprehensive commitment to youth mentoring through corporate support and employee volunteerism by presenting them with the Dr H. Martin Deranian Award at their Annual Meeting in January. As the first agency honoree for distinguished service, Dr. Deranian had ‘set the gold standard’ for mentoring by remaining in regular contact with his ‘little’ for more than four decades who, in turn, paid the ultimate tribute to him by becoming a mentor himself.
In addition to local recognition, Dr. Deranian received an award at the statehouse in Boston for his exceptional volunteerism. This award, annually given in his honor, is presented to an individual or group who best exemplify the mission and values of the agency, going above and beyond expectations to provide high quality, long-term mentoring services for children most in need of support.
Over the last eight years, Unum has emerged as the model program for corporate partnership development efforts throughout our service area – serving as the premier example of successful collaboration providing financial support and meaningful employee involvement. In 2002, Unum was the first local company to partner with Big Brothers Big Sisters to mentor disadvantaged children at the Elm Park Community School. Exceeding most local and national standards, the average length of volunteer involvement for Unum employees is nearly four years making a positive difference for so many children in the community. Additionally, many employees have become ambassadors for the school-based program – helping to recruit additional volunteers so that more children can benefit from having a mentor.
Unum employees also provide invaluable support to the agency through other volunteer strategies including formal Board and Committee involvement and participation in special events including the annual Rodmen Ride for Kids. Unum has opened its doors literally and figuratively to at-risk community children by providing space for program activities as well as supporting the involvement of ‘Littles’ in other positive development strategies like “Bring Your Child to Work Day”.
Unum has supported the efforts of Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring programs in every possible way through corporate support and individual involvement, truly actualizing the spirit of the Dr. H. Martin Deranian Award.
