At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Mass/Metrowest we are blessed to have inspiring supporters who volunteer with us as mentors and help us to achieve our mission of changing children’s lives for the better, forever.
Gaetano Scuderi, also known as Guy, is from Agawam, MA, where he was born and raised. He is a senior at Worcester Polytechnic Institute majoring in Biomedical Engineering. He hopes to go on and receive a PhD in a similar field. He describes himself as goal oriented, driven and passionate about the work he does. Giving back to his community is important to Guy. He serves as the president for the Habitat for Humanity club at WPI. He enjoys being involved in building homes for those in need. Guy also volunteers once a week with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Mass/Metrowest as a mentor in our WPI mentoring program.
One of his favorite things about being in Worcester is the opportunity to be a Big.
“Once a week, I visit my Little and during that time we basically talk about everything together. He is able to really open up to me and I am glad I can be there for him as a support system,” says Guy.
Guy volunteers with BBBS CM/MW because “being a mentor is a rewarding experience.” Guy states, “As a volunteer with BBBS CM/MW, I am able to help guide my Little and watch him become a more well-rounded individual.” Guy’s goal is to be there for his Little. He helps his Little with his academics but they also have fun together playing games and doing activities. Guy’s favorite part about having a Little is building a strong friendship with someone. He hopes that his Little will come to feel like family in the future. He believes that “family is where everything starts and friendships are an extension of family.” Guy continues to grow with his Little through their shared experience as a BBBS CM/MW match.
Guy hopes other volunteer mentors share his motivator—show your Little your commitment to them. Be there and be present. Make sure being a Big is something you want because you’re going to help shape your Little’s life.
